Irish High Crosses
Tynan There is no sign of an early monastic enclosure at Tynan, but the presence of at least four high crosses suggest there must have been an early monastic settlement present here. It has been suggested that the enclosure may have been situated at the site of the Church of Ireland parish church. On the private grounds of the former country house, known as Tynan Abbey are three more fragmentary high crosses. Two of these crosses, the Island Cross and the Well Cross were brought to Tynan Abbey from Glenarb, by Sir James Stronge in the mid 19th century. Glenarb in County Tyrone was the site of an early ecclesiastical settlement, tradionally it is believed there were seven crosses there, the last of which was moved from there to Caledon Demesne in 1878. Village Crosses The fragmentary village cross was moved to it's present position in 1960, it is believed it was also moved several times before this. It is comprised of at least two high crosses. The upper shaft and head formed part of one cross and the lower shaft came from another cross. Its not known if the base belonged to either of these crosses or belonged to another cross. The east face of the lower shaft features a carved panel showing Adam and Eve, pictured below right. On the west face is a badly weathered panel containing a tall figure and some smaller figures. The upper shaft has a lot of damage to the head, it has a single boss on each arm surrounding a large central boss. The top of the cross and northern arm, as well as three pieces of the ring, are modern replacements. |

Cross Fragments Also present in the village are the fragments of at least one more high cross. Built into the gaveyard wall, next to the eastern gatepost is part of a cross ring and built into the bottom of the gatepost is what appears to be a cross base, see images below. the moulding on the ring fragment also appears to match the moulding on the lower shaft of the village cross. The fragment of a high cross shaft is presently located in the graveyard. |

More Tynan Crosses The three cross at Tynan Abbey are on private property and permission to visit them must be granted before viewing. For this reason I will not publish there exact location. As I stated previously The Well Cross and the Island cross were moved to here from Glenarb. The terrace cross is believed to have been moved to it's present location from Tynan Village. |
